I’m just down the road in Hampden. I ride, to work in owings mills rain/shine/year-round. I own a car but I put many more miles on the bike. I ride long rides 100-200k on weekends.
I’d be up for a friendly evening ride. short, long, trail, road, whatever. better if it ends with beer.
I could not see a way of posting to this blog, nor do I see mention of when the group meets so, I am posting here. Keep me in the loop.
Like Bob, and many others with our numbers ever increasing, I bike to work all year long too.
Additionally, on the weekends, I ride with three clubs–the Baltimore Bike Club, DC Randonneurs, or the Severna Park Peloton.
If you see a guy riding in a pink Team BBC kit around Baltimore, Annapolis, DC, eastern WV, or NoVA, Delaware, or the eastern shore around Ocean City, give a shout–most likely it will be me.

I know it’s not north B’more, but could anyone give me some feedback on riding the Gwynns Falls Trail? I’ve been wanting to check it out, but am edgy about some of the areas it passes through. Any sections where I’d need to be on my guard, or is the whole thing pretty safe?
I’ve never been cycling around there, but Leakin Park is beautiful! The parts of the trail I’ve seen look really nice. I’ve been meaning to take a ride over there soon one of these days.
A couple weekends ago, my wife and I rode all of the GF Trail between Leon Day Park and the I-70 Park and Ride. (On the map, that would be everything between T1 and T4.) Neither of us felt threatened, at all, and I am anything but am imposing figure. Even though it was an early Saturday afternoon, there was hardly any bike or foot traffic. It was an excellent ride, and we wondered why so many people shy away from Gwynns Falls and Leakin Parks. Unbelievable oasis that makes you forget you’re in the city limits.
I think my concern would be for the sections of the GF trail below T4, especially where it passes underneath Route 40 and down in the industrial area near the stadiums. But I’m not terribly familiar with all of the neighborhoods it passes through, so perhaps I’m more paranoid than I need to be.
The next few weekends are packed for me, but I’ll post here later in Sept to maybe try and set up a ride.
Sounds good!
When Zack rides to work, it’s down around those parts, and he doesn’t report any problems, except potholes on Calvert on the way home, LOL.
The funny thing was that you had this very serene smile on your face. I could tell you that you were headed towards the watertower, looking forward to the events to come. Very cool.
So I cruised Gwynns Falls yesterday. It. was. awesome. The contrast between Leakin Park and the urban sections of the trail is fantastic. Leakin is gorgeous and there’s some very cool architecture amongst the old factories down by the stadium. It was easy riding on a beautiful day, everything I could have hoped for.
Weather permitting, I may be heading back this coming weekend for a longer ride with my camera. If you’re interested, let me know: kalidurga1-at-yahoo-dot-com.
Hello there, I’ve got another Gwynns Falls question…
I’m planning to spectate at the Charm City ‘cross race tomorrow at Druid Hill and then ride over to the trail. What’s the traffic like on Gwynns Falls Parkway, and how hilly is it? Does anyone know of a better route for someone who’s allergic to climbing and only moderately experienced in traffic?
Thanks very much, folks. And congrats on the Little One, Johnny!
do you have any suggestions on where to sell a bike? I have a medium frame cannondale f400 with upgraded frame, shocks and pedals. not looking for a trade in.
I’ve never taken Gwynn’s Falls Parkway over, but I assume it’s a mess. My usual route–and I mean like two or three times a week–is to take Liberty Heights Blvd/Rd/whatever up to Liberty Heights the neighborhood and then cut through Dickeysville (less hill) or Franklintown (more hill) to the trail. There’s two hills going up Liberty Heights and I think if you’re in any kind of reasonable shape, it shouldn’t be a thing.
I like taking the route through Dickeysville. It’s kind of a cool old mill neighborhood and sends you down Wetheredsville Road, which feels like a small portal to backroad WV for a couple of miles.
Thanks for the route, travelxlight, I’ll remember that. And I agree about Dickeysville, I especially like the abandoned road section between the town and Windsor Mill Rd.

NBBB Brigadier Sighting Alert?
I rode right by Johnny as he was walking his bike across Roland Ave, right after the Roland Ave / University Pkwy split.
Well, I think I did. I thought I recognized the orange helmet, but I didn’t think you had a full beard.

Oh yeah, I’m sporting my fall beard early! That was me! You should have joined us for a little ride for coffee!
