I never posted much from Washington with everything that happened in August (tragedy, pregnancy news, being sick, etc.).

On a Friday, we were catching the Metro to Dupont Circle to visit a bookstore we really like (Second Story Books), and we walked past the IRS building. On a bike rack, this orange beauty jumped out at us. A Yuba Mundo.

Not knowing we are pregnant, we admired it in a sort of abstract way. But I’ve been thinking of cargo bikes lately, for a possible purchase in the next year or so. And this bike has been hacked nicely!

Zip-tie city! I love those things, but not for more “permanent” work like on that bike.

Looks like you guys were visiting the bike racks outside of the main EPA entrance (my office)! That Yuba popped up about 4-5 months ago. There are some pretty sweet rides that show up there. There are just as many in the two bike rooms, located in the parking garages too.

You work at the EPA? That’s awesome! Next time we’re in DC, we have to score some coffee! Frankie’s not riding since she got pregnant:(

Let me add to that:
The color… the cargo platforms… everything is perfect.

I test rode one in Portland, OR and it was great. Trying to figure out the best kid/cargo carrying bike for an affordable cost. The Yuba’s clearly the most versatile, but it’s not cheap ($1,200 or so plus shipping and maybe some extra for accessories).
I’m hoping Gary Fisher comes out with the El Ranchero soon and it’s affordable.

HAH! Um. That is my bike. So funny to come across it randomly on the web. My landlord built the platforms–without being asked. He just saw the bike and took out his tape measure about 2 seconds later. He advocated for the zip ties, which haven’t been a problem throughout the summer. I usually tote around my girlfriend on the back.
It is $1000 for the actual bike without any deck on the back. Then I had it built out at silver cycles–which was 85 bucks. They did a bad build so things have been falling off of it (the bolts for the back mostly). With that being said, some of the basic components have been kind of junk. I actually just got back from the bike store where I found out that they have a crap hub with bearings that are going bad and I have to replace the headset–a few more replacements are adding up to $600 additional, which normally would definitely price me out of it, but it is a REALLY FUN BIKE. If anyone has more bike knowledge about this stuff, I am actually trying to figure out what is the best strategy moving forward on it.
If you seriously are thinking of getting a Yuba, I think the best way to do it is to go to a place that specializes in downhill mountain bikes or the like, and have them help you get good components, and built it out from the frame–which I think is very sturdy and around $500.
Finally if you have kids (I don’t), they supposedly can be rigged to carry two child seats.
