For the National Night Out Parade a few weeks ago, ElRo had to carry a padded laptop bag from REI without smashing it. I rigged up a tote bag pannier for the two mile ride. Worked perfectly, though I think anything that weighed more than an empty bag inside of it might have swayed a bit.

Panniers are okay. But HybridBackpack is the better alternative. Panniers can’t carry your backpack unless you find one that is the size of your backpack and that would cost more.
HybridBackpack allows you to take any items (backpack, laptop, shoulder bag, 24 cans of cola, 24 bottles of beer, etc) measuring 49″ x 36″ on your rack. It sits on top of the rack rather than on the side for more stability. The item even holds a soft case guitar.
Check out the website.
I never understood why somebody did not come up with something that allowed a rider to take there existing bag or items.

Actually, side-loaded panniers are closer to the ground and MUCH more stable than anything on top of a rack. “Market” type panniers will hold most of these items (not a guitar, but maybe a mandolin, LOL).
